As a boy of six I sat
upon my father’s knee
and he told me of a battle fierce
raging inside of me.
He said, «Two beasts live within your breast
in a fight until the death.
With tooth and claw they struggle hard,
to own your very breath.
One wolf lives for all that’s good —
compassion fuels his heart.
He is the faithful, loyal self —
with love he plays his part.
The other beast is evil, son.
Raw hatred stains his soul.
His lies and greed, and jealous eyes
can turn your heart to coal.»
«Now know my son, you’re not alone.
You share this fight with all!
But every human in this world must answer to this call.»
As I looked into my daddy’s eyes
there was wisdom and great might,
and I asked him with a trembling voice
«Which wolf will win this fight?»
Well he smiled then to hear these words,
as though he knew my need.
His answer it stays with me still — «It's the one you feed.»
«The one you feed will always win,
so feed it every day.
Though the other beast will never die,
you can keep him at bay.
And as you grow into a man,
and you hear the call to lead,
with every thought and word and deed —
Which one will you feed?»
Which one… which one… which one will you feed?
Which one… which one… which one will you feed?
Yes, which one… which one… which one will you feed?
Which one… which one… which one do you feed?
